Adding fractions with common denominator

How do you add fractions with common denominator?

Rule for adding fractions with the common denominator:

Add the numerators of the fractions and do not add denominators of the fractions.

Examples of adding fractions with common denominator

Example 1.

Add fractions with common denominator:

5 + 8
1414

We add the numerator 5 and the numerator 8:

5 + 8 = 
1414
5 + 8 = 13
1414

Example 2.

Add fractions with common denominator:

3 + 16 + b
2121

We add the numerator 3 and the numerator 16 + b:

3 + 16 + b = 
2121
3 + 16 + b = 
21
19 + b
21

Example 3.

Add fractions with common denominator:

14 + 17
59 + c59 + c

We add the numerator 14 and the numerator 17:

14 + 17 =
