Adding mixed fractions with uncommon denominators

How to add mixed fractions with uncommon denominators?

Examples of adding mixed fractions with uncommon denominators

Problem: Add mixed fractions with uncommon denominators

52 + 37
1512

Solution.

1. Add the whole numbers of the mixed fractions

5 + 3 = 8

2. Add the fractions

2 + 7
1512

The denominators are 15 and 12.

The least common multiple of 15 and 12:

lcm(15, 12) = 60

See least common multiple 12 and 15.

The least common multiple is the lowest common denominator of the fractions.

So, the lowest common denominator of the fractions is 60.

Change the first fraction to the lowest common denominator

2 * 4 = 8
15 * 460

Change the second fraction to the lowest common denominator

7 * 5 = 35
12 * 560

Add the fractions

8 + 35 = 43
606060

3. Combine the whole and fraction parts

8 + 43 = 843
6060

Answer

52 + 37 = 843
