How to perform addition of monomials?

Addition monomials rule:

When adding like monomials add the coefficients of the like monomials.

Example of addition of monomials.

Addition of monomials

14a + 2a

Solution.

The coefficients of the monomials are 14 and 2.

Add the coefficients of the monomials

14a + 2a = 16a

The answer: 16a.

Example of addition of monomials.

Add the following monomials

5.1x + 4.4x

Solution.

The coefficients of the monomials are 4.4 and 5.1.

Add the coefficients of the monomials

5.1x + 4.4x = 9.5x

The answer: 9.5x.

Example of addition of monomials.

Add the following monomials

7.4a + a

Solution.

7.4a + a =

7.4a + 1 * a

7.4a + 1 * a

The coefficients of the monomials are 7.4 and 1.

Add the coefficients of the monomials

7.4a + a =

7.4a + 1 * a = 8.4a

7.4a + 1 * a = 8.4a

Answer: 8.4a.

Example of addition of monomials.

Add the following monomials

4a^{4} + 3a^{4}

Solution.

The coefficients of the monomials are 4 and 3.

Add the coefficients of the monomials

4a^{4} + 3a^{4} = 7a^{4}

Answer: 7a^{4}.

Example of addition of monomials.

Add the following monomials

16a^{4} + 3b^{3}

Solution.

See the definition of like terms.

These two terms 16a^{4} and 3b^{3} are not like terms.

We can only add like terms.
