Can a numerical coefficient be negative?

Can a coefficient be negative? Yes, it can be.

Examples of negative numerical coefficients

Example 1.

Define the numerical coefficient of

-x

We can write

-x = -1 * x

The numerical coefficient of -x is (-1).

Example 2.

Define the numerical coefficient of

-5x

The numerical coefficient is (-5).

Example 3.

Find the numerical coefficient

-10xy

The numerical coefficient is (-10).

Example 4.

Define the numerical coefficient of

-57a32

The numerical coefficient is (-57).

Example 5.

What is the numerical coefficient

(-8a6)/(16a5)

Solution:

(-8a6)/(16a5) =
(-8/16) * (a6/a5) =
(-1/2) * (a6 - 5) =
(-1/2) * (a1) =
-a/2

The numerical coefficient is (-1/2).
