How do you determine the degree of a monomial?

To determine the degree of a monomial add the exponents of all letters (variables) in this monomial.

Example 1.

Determine the degree of the monomial

5n

Solution.

5n = 5n^{1}

The literal part of the monomial is

n^{1}

The answer: the degree of the monomial 5n is 1.

Example 2.

Determine the degree of the monomial

6n^{3}

Solution.

The literal part of the monomial is

n^{3}

The answer: the degree of the monomial 6n^{3} is 3.

Example 3.

Determine the degree of the monomial

47a^{3}b^{2}

Solution.

The literal part of the monomial is

a^{3}b^{2}

Add the exponents of the variables:

3 + 2 = 5

The answer: the degree of the monomial 47a^{3}b^{2} is 5.

Example 4.

Determine the degree of the monomial

5a^{2}h^{3}s^{4}

Solution.

Add the exponents of the variables:

2 + 3 + 4 = 9

The answer: the degree of the monomial 5a^{2}h^{3}s^{4} is 9.
