Long division explanation

The long division is simple.

Let's study the following example.

Example of long division.

The division problem:

125/5

Write the problem using the long division symbol. We put the divisor before the long division symbol. Then we put the dividend under the long division symbol.

5)125

Now try to divide the first dividend digit (the 1) by our divisor 5.

This division (1/5) cannot give us a whole number because 1 is less than 5.

Now try to divide the two first dividend digits (the 12) by the divisor 5.

This division (12/5) gives us the whole number 2 and the remainder 2.

Place the 2 above the long division symbol:

  2
5)125

Multiply the divisor 5 by the 2, then subtract the 5*2 from the 12:

  2
5)125
 -10
   2

Bring down the last dividend digit 5 and place it next to the 2:

  2
5)125
 -10
   25

The 25 contains the divisor (5) 5 times.

Place the 5 next to the 2 above the long division symbol.

Multiply the divisor 5 by the 5, then subtract the 5*5 from the 25:

  25
5)125
 -10
   25
  -25
    0

So the final answer is:

125/5 = 25
