Long division symbol

The long division symbol is used when dividing numbers.

The long division symbol consists of two parts. The first part is a right parenthesis and the second part is a vinculum.

Here the vinculum is an overline.

The long division symbol:

)

A straight vertical bar can be used instead of the right parenthesis:

|

Examples of using the long division symbol:

divisor 12)1476 dividend

12|1476

In the examples above the 12 is a divisor and the 1476 is a dividend.

The result of the division is called a quotient. The quotient, it is 123, is written above the vinculum:

   123 quotient
12)1476

   123
12|1476

The long division symbol has a different name. It is the division bracket.
