How to multiply fractions and mixed numbers?

Rule for multiplying fractions and mixed numbers:

1. Convert the mixed number to improper fraction;
2. Multiply these two fractions;
3. Convert the result to a mixed fraction.

Examples of multiplying fractions and mixed numbers

Example.

Multiply a fraction by a mixed number:

2 * 52
73

1. The mixed number is equal to the improper fraction:

52 = 37
77

2. We multiply the fractions:

2 * 37
77

We multiply the numerator 2 by the numerator 37 and the denominator 7 by the denominator 7:

2 * 37 = 74
7 * 749

3. Convert the improper fraction 74/49 into a mixed fraction:

74 = 125
