Multiplying fractions with unlike denominators

How do you multiply fractions with unlike denominators?

Multiplying fractions with unlike denominators is easy.

We multiply the numerator by the numerator and the denominator by the denominator.

Examples of multiplying fractions with unlike denominators

Example 1.

Multiply fractions with unlike denominators:

1 * 3
28

We multiply the numerator 1 by the numerator 3 and the denominator 2 by the denominator 8:

1 * 3 = 3
2 * 816

Example 2.

Multiply fractions with unlike denominators:

31 * 4 + a
415

We multiply the numerator 31 by the numerator (4 + a) and the denominator 41 by the denominator 5:

31 * (4 + a) = 124 + 31a
41 * 5205

Example 3.

Multiply fractions with unlike denominators:

3 * 14
5 + a5 + a

Multiply the numerator 3 by the numerator 14 and the denominator (5 + a) by the denominator (5 + a):

3 * 14 = 42
(5 + a) * (5 + a)(5 + a)2
