How to multiply improper fractions by proper fractions?

Multiplying improper fractions by proper fractions is easy.

We multiply the numerator by the numerator and the denominator by the denominator and convert the result to a mixed fraction.

### Examples of multiplying improper fractions by proper fractions

Example 1.

Multiply an improper fraction by a proper fraction:

5 3 * 2 4

We multiply the numerator 5 by the numerator 3 and the denominator 2 by the denominator 4:

5 * 3 15 = 2 * 4 8

Convert the improper fraction into a mixed fraction:

15 7 = 1 8 8

Example 2.

Multiply an improper fraction by a proper fraction:

10 14 * 3 17

We multiply the numerator 10 by the numerator 14 and the denominator 3 by the denominator 17:

10 * 14 140 = 3 * 17 51

Convert the improper fraction into a mixed fraction:

140 38 = 2 51 51

Example 3.

Multiply an improper fraction by a proper fraction:

9 23 * 2 24

We multiply the numerator 9 by the numerator 23 and the denominator 2 by the denominator 24:

9 * 23 69 = 2 * 24 16

Convert the improper fraction into a mixed fraction:

69 5 = 4 16 16
