Easy rule for dividing fractions and whole numbers

Rules for dividing fractions and whole numbers:

1. Convert the whole number to a fraction;
2. Invert the second fraction (the divisor) to get its reciprocal;
3. Multiply the first fraction (the dividend) by the reciprocal;
4. Simplify the answer if possible.

See Reciprocal fractions.

Example of dividing fractions and whole numbers

Problem: Divide a fraction and a whole numbers

15 ÷ 5
51

1. Convert the whole number to a fraction.

The denominator of 5 is 1

5 = 5
1

See The denominator of a whole number.

And now

15 ÷ 5
511

2. Invert the second fraction (the divisor) to get its reciprocal.

The divisor is 5/1. Turn it upside down to get its reciprocal:

the reciprocal for 5 is 1
15

3. Multiply the first fraction (the dividend) by the reciprocal.

The dividend is 15/51. Multiply the dividend by the reciprocal 1/5:

15 * 1 =
515
15 * 1 = 15
51 * 5255

4. Simplify the answer.

It is necessary to factor the numerator and denominator to reduce the fraction:

15 =
255
1 * 15 =
17 * 15
1 * 15 = 1
17 * 1517

The answer is:

15 ÷ 5 = 1
5117
