## Rules for dividing fractions and whole numbers

Rules for dividing fractions and whole numbers explanation.

### Easy rule for dividing fractions and whole numbers

Rules for dividing fractions and whole numbers:

1. Convert the whole number to a fraction;
2. Invert the second fraction (the divisor) to get its reciprocal;
3. Multiply the first fraction (the dividend) by the reciprocal;
4. Simplify the answer if possible.

### Example of dividing fractions and whole numbers

Problem: Divide a fraction and a whole numbers

15 ÷ 5 51

1. Convert the whole number to a fraction.

The denominator of 5 is 1

5 5 = 1

And now

15 5 ÷ 51 1

2. Invert the second fraction (the divisor) to get its reciprocal.

The divisor is 5/1. Turn it upside down to get its reciprocal:

5 1 the reciprocal for is 1 5

3. Multiply the first fraction (the dividend) by the reciprocal.

The dividend is 15/51. Multiply the dividend by the reciprocal 1/5:

15 1 * = 51 5
15 * 1 15 = 51 * 5 255

4. Simplify the answer.

It is necessary to factor the numerator and denominator to reduce the fraction:

15 = 255
1 * 15 = 17 * 15
1 * 15 1 = 17 * 15 17

The answer is:

15 1 ÷ 5 = 51 17
