Easy rule for dividing fractions

Rules for dividing fractions:

1. Invert the second fraction (the divisor) to get its reciprocal;
2. Multiply the first fraction (the dividend) by the reciprocal;
3. Simplify the answer if possible.

See Reciprocal fractions.

Example of dividing fractions

Problem: Divide two fractions

1 ÷ 5
612

1. Invert the second fraction (the divisor) to get its reciprocal.

The divisor is 5/12. Turn it upside down to get its reciprocal:

the reciprocal for 5 is 12
125

2. Multiply the first fraction (the dividend) by the reciprocal.

The dividend is 1/6. Multiply the dividend by the reciprocal:

1 * 12 =
65
1 * 12 = 12
6 * 530

3. Simplify the answer.

It is necessary to factor the numerator and denominator to reduce the fraction:

12 = 6 * 2 = 2
306 * 55

The answer is:

1 ÷ 5 = 2
6125
