How to subtract improper fractions and mixed numbers?

Rule for subtracting improper fractions and mixed numbers:

1. Convert the mixed number to improper fraction;
2. Subtract these improper fractions;
3. Convert the result to a mixed fraction.

Examples of subtracting improper fractions and mixed numbers

Problem: Subtract the mixed number from the improper fraction

Solution.

1. The mixed fraction is equal to the improper fraction:

72 = 23
33

2. Subtract the fractions

6 - 23 = 
53
6 * 3 - 23 * 5 = 
5 * 33 * 5
18 - 115 = 
1515
18 - 115 = 97
1515

3. Convert the improper fraction into a mixed fraction

97 = - 67
1515

Answer

6 - 72 = - 67
