How to subtract mixed fractions with like denominators?

Rules for subtracting mixed fractions with the like denominators:

1. Subtract the whole numbers;
2. Subtract the fractions;
3. Convert the result to a mixed fraction (if necessary).

Examples of subtracting mixed fractions with like denominators

Example 1.

Subtract mixed fractions with like denominators:

454 - 441
55

1. Subtract the whole numbers:

45 - 44 = 1

2. Subtract the fractions:

4 - 1
55

We subtract the numerator 4 and the numerator 1:

4 - 1 = 4 - 1 = 3
5555

The answer:

454 - 441 = 13
555
